Light It Up: Metal Lantern (Homeschool MakerClass)

Light It Up: Metal Lantern (Homeschool MakerClass)

$35.00

Grades 6+ | April 24 | 9:00 - 12:00

In this hands-on fabrication class, students will design and create their own custom metal lantern using the same digital fabrication tools found in modern manufacturing shops.

Students will begin by learning how designs are created for metal cutting. Using digital design software, they will develop a pattern that allows light to shine through the metal. Designs may include shapes, symbols, silhouettes, or repeating patterns that create interesting shadows when illuminated.

Once their designs are complete, students will prepare their files for the MetalFab system, where a precision laser will cut their patterns into thin metal sheets.

After cutting, students will move into the fabrication phase where they will:

• Clean and prepare the cut metal
• Learn safe handling and finishing techniques
• Shape the metal into a cylindrical lantern
• Assemble the lantern using simple fastening methods

When finished, students will place a battery LED candle inside their lantern to see how the cut patterns create glowing designs and shadows.

Throughout the class students will experience the full digital fabrication workflow:

Design → Precision Cutting → Fabrication → Finishing

By the end of the class, each student will leave with a custom metal lantern they designed themselves and a deeper understanding of how digital designs can be transformed into real-world metal products.

No prior fabrication experience is required. All materials, instruction, and safety equipment are provided.

Students will also gain exposure to tools and processes used in manufacturing, welding, metalworking, and industrial fabrication careers.
